An Overview of Volcano Flank Terraces on Mars

چکیده
Introduction: Flank terraces are topographically subtle, laterally extensive structures on the flanks of several large Martian volcanoes [1]. The origin of terraces has been ascribed to several mechanisms, including elastic self-loading [2], lithospheric flexure [3], gravitational spreading [4], magma chamber tumes-cence [5], and shallow slumping [6]. Here we summa-rise the results of our work to characterise flank terrace geometry, determine the causal mechanism of terrace formation, and establish the role of terraces within the volcanotectonic evolution of large volcanoes on Mars. Observations: Flank terraces have a convex-upward profile in cross section, consistent with thrust fault morphology. As convex-outward structures in plan view, they form an imbricate, " fish scale " pattern upon each terraced volcano (fig. 1). Using Mars Or-biter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) [7] and Shuttle Radar

Geologically recent tectonic, volcanic and fluvial activity on the eastern flank of the Olympus Mons volcano, Mars
[1] We show evidence of very recent ( 25–40 Myr) geologic activity on the eastern flank of Olympus Mons volcano that includes a suite of fluvial (channel networks), volcanic (emplacement of lava flows and dikes), and tectonic (wrinkle ridges and troughs) processes. The combination and youth of these features confirms the importance of geological activity continuing to the present on Mars. Citat...

متن کاملHeight Concordance of Martian Volcanoes Over Time
An update to Carr’s 1976 paper is provided by using modern public-release Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Observer measurements from the past five years. Specifically, the heights for 21 of the largest volcanoes on Mars were compiled using MOLA elevation data. This was then combined with crater counts obtained from THEMIS visual images of the volcano flanks and calderas to yield relative ages ass...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Simulations of Volcanic Spreading: Implications for the Structure of Olympus Mons
Introduction: Large basaltic volcanoes, such as Olympus Mons on Mars, and the Hawaiian volcanoes on Earth, are thought to be subject to large scale slope failure and flank collapse, which scatter landslide and avalanche debris (a.k.a., aureole deposits) about the base of the edifice [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Volcano growth may also be accompanied by gravitational relaxation of the edifice, refer...
متن کاملDebris-covered Glaciers within the Arsia Mons Fan-shaped Deposit: Implications for Glaciation, Deglaciation and the Origin of Lineated Valley Fill
Introduction: Recent MOC and THEMIS data have shed new light upon intriguing flow-like features on Mars including viscous flow-like features [1], lobate debris aprons [2], concentric crater fill, lineated valley fill, and features interpreted as rock glaciers or debris-covered glaciers [3,4,5,6]. These features are distributed over lowto mid-latitudes and all appear to have experienced flow due...
